In today’s class, each group made a list of what they thought were the ten most important inventions of all time. Group one’s list included: 1) Electricity2) Communication lines3) Traffic lights4) The wheel5) Airplanes6) Matches7) Cell phones8) Cars9) Stove/oven10) Facebook
Group one felt that electricity was the most important invention of all time, because you use it every day. Another reason we discussed was that a lot of inventions on our list would not be possible without electricity. Each group could reasonably argue if the top picked inventions were critical or not. In each group there were different ideas and opinions pertaining to the most important inventions. Possible research questions: How do I keep electricity going? How do I transfer electricity? How do I make different forms of it?How do I experiment with electricity?
Kristi Eileen Quinn
In comparison to group one, group three also though that electricity was the greatest invention created. Within our group, we stated how without electricity we would not have had the items to which we own today. Examples include ipods, lights, stereo systems, etc. Also, we discussed the research questions the researcher at the time may have asked himself. The questions included "how could electricity become a safety hazard?," "How can we conserve electricity?," and other questions.
ReplyDeleteI don't think people realize (at least in America) how much electricity is integrated in our lives.
ReplyDeleteTO illustrate, recall the last time you were home for a power outage. Don't you hate it when you enter a room, turn the switch and nothing happens?! Even though you know the electric is out?
Our group like many others felt that electricity is a crucial part of our daily lives. We use it for just about everything, from taking showers to going on the internet through our computers. If Ben Franklin had not discovered it one day by flying a kite, we would still be stuck in the colonial days.
ReplyDeleteWith that said though I kind of feel spoiled with having electricity in my life. Let’s remember that before all this people used candles to light up their rooms. It makes me feel blessed to live in a developed world/country.
I too was in group three, whom also said that electricity was the most important invention. And I couldn't agree more. Without electricity we wouldn't be able to use half the gadgets we use today, and I know that if there were no power, a lot of us wouldnt know what to do. Our televisions, video games, music equipment, almost everything we use runs off of it.
ReplyDeleteLike Alex mentioned, I would also ask, "How can we use electricity safely?" and I would also ask, "How can we transform electricity into other forms of energy?" These question may also put further emphasis on the importance, and dangers of having it.
My group agreed that electricity is very high on the list of top inventions. However, we felt that plumbing and running water were more important. I can’t imagine living in a world where you don’t shower for days, and the streets smell because everyone’s waste is thrown outside. Also, it’s very unsanitary. Now a day’s it’s taught all the time to make sure you wash your hands after anything you touch and that we sterilize equipment. We constantly are using antibacterial hand sanitizer; it’s very common to have some wherever you go. I think that with the invention of plumbing and running water came the clean movement and it taught people about germs and just how to be conscious of your hygiene.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of my peers that electricity is one of the most important inventions. It is one of the most important inventions because without it, many other useful tools would not be possible. I too can not imagine living without electricity because I take for granite all of the luxuries it provides in my daily life.
ReplyDeleteMy group said that the internet was one of the most important inventions. Although electricity is more important because it supports a lot of other technologies.
Our group said that plumbing was the most important invention ever created. We believed that plumbing was the most important invention of the modern era. This was because of the many sanitation improvements that plumbing had created. With the advent of plumbing came many future developments in sanitation and the medical fields.
ReplyDeleteWhile we believed that plumbing was the most important we acknowledged the other inventions named as important as well. However, we feel that without plumbing our society might have died off before many of the other inventions were created.
Jeffrey says,
ReplyDeleteWhat is an invention? An invention is a new device, method, or process developed from study and experimentation, which help make our lives much easier. We all dread and panic whenever we picture our lives without a cellphone, computer, printer, etc. Everything would require more work, especially research.
As a member of Group 4, we concluded that the most important invention of all time would be the Internet (Google in particular). The researchers in this group argued that this search engine allows for smooth, efficient research, conducted in a timely fashion. The search engine, Google, provides immense amounts of sources for a required study. It is easy to access and saves the researcher a lot of time! Some research questions which Group 4 generated included: How would research differ without the use of an Internet? Why do some researchers prefer certain search engines over others? How does a researcher distinguish between a reliable source and an unreliable one?
I agree with Kristi's point that electricity has been one of the best inventions because when you think about today's every day life, look at how much uses electricity. I think it was nice how Kristi even stated some questions that she would use if she wrote a research paper about this.
ReplyDeleteI think the distinctions between what the different groups considered important is very interesting. While group one's picks were pretty specific and more modern, my group's (two) inventions (from what I can recall) were in some ways more general and perhaps not all from the 20th or 21st Centuries.
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting to see how many groups picked things like cell phones and facebook, which are now vital to most Americans' existence, but often things like the sun dial (a precursor to the clock) or antibiotics, which enabled us to survive elementary school, didn't make the cut. I'm not saying that any group had the "correct" list, or that any ideas are more important than others, but rather that it is interesting the things we value in our lives.
Without electric we would not have most of the things that we do have now. Electricity is an essential part of our lives because it generates everything from charging our cell phones, playing video games, and also using our laptops. I don’t think most of us can go a day without using any electricity. But even though we narrowed our lists down to the top 10, there are many other electric objects that we cannot live without.
ReplyDeleteI agree that electricity is the number one experiment of all time, many people do not realize how truly important it is in our lives. Not only does electricity give us light and heat in our homes but it also provides us with the energy to prepare food which is essential for all people to live. Electricity truly is the most essential tool in the lives humans live today. I did not agree with group ones 10 top inventions they had communication lines and later cell phones, personally I view them as relatively the same thing, but as we learn when we research everyone has their own opinion.

ReplyDeleteAs part of group one, and apparently the majority of the groups in the class, we agreed that electricity was pertinent in everyday life. I personally have been in situations where we did not have access to electricity for, at times, weeks on end. After being without electricity for so long, you find other ways of completing the tasks you need to do. I do agree that in the times we live in now, and the lifestyle that we choose, yes electricity is possibly the most important invention. But I disagree with it being the overall most important invention of all time. You have to keep in mind the many places that still continue everyday life without the use of electricity. For instance, many tribes and oversees soldiers are without power sources daily. Yes, their standard of living may not be as high as ours, but they are still surviving. So, is electricity still the most important invention to you?
I absolutely agree with this post and being part of group 1 as well, we came to the conclusion that electricity was the most important invention. Every group seemed to have an item on their list that couldn't of been invented without electricity so those items go hand in hand with electricity. I believe that electricity is the most essential tool in our everyday lives.

ReplyDeleteI agree that the top invention is electricity, because without some type of electricity we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the things that we have in our homes or use any appliances that we need to survive. There are ways to survive without electricity, but the use of electricity makes things so much easier.
I believe it to be very hard to rank the top 10 inventions of all time. Who is to say that one invention is superior to another for instance I believe the printing press is the most valued invention of all time. Their was a show once that counted down the most important inventions and that was one of them. The Amish get along fine without ever using most of the modern day electronics or other crap we think is a necessity.
ReplyDeleteWhat I think that group 3 meant when they said that electricity is the number one invention is that the ability to harness electricity. Electricity has been around since the beginning of time. No one invented electricity. Ben Franklin's famous kite experiement was to prove that lighting was electricity but he did'nt invent it. Saying that electricity is an invention is like saying that sunlight or trees are inventions. It is actually part of nature

ReplyDeleteMy group decided that indoor plumbing was the top invention of all time, but I also agree with my peers that electricity is an extremely important invention. It's hard to imagine everyday life without either one of these inventions. You don't realize how much you use certain things in life until it is brought to your attention.
